FIFTEEN
The happiness I exuded at work didn't go unnoticed by any of my coworkers. Everyone regarded me as though I were a new person. I'd morphed into a happy-go-lucky personality since they'd last seen me. Something I wasn't exactly known for. But I couldn't deny that there was a noticeable difference to me since Matt and I had officially come out as a couple. And I liked the change.
Five weeks earlier I was a stock boy and occasional cashier who'd walked the store with a fake smile to earn a paycheck. Five weeks earlier I was the gay kid at school who'd isolated himself from his friends because he was afraid of letting his true self shine. Now I was truly happy. I was inspired. I was motivated. I was eager. All because of Matt.
He and I sat in my car while we ate our dinner. He told me about his grueling training session. Then he told me Chase had confronted Eric in the locker room following football practice. Apparently, Chase had warned Eric to "end his bullshit or suffer the consequences." Before the argument got physical, Coach Turner had stepped in.
I exhaled a drawn-out "so" and then shifted in my seat to face him. "Eric's been pissed at you because of Kylie. And he's pissed at Chase because of something to do with steroids?"
Matt nodded.
"Well . . . what happened?"
He took a deep breath. "Last year, Eric got his hands on steroids. He got a lot of the football playersâand some other athletesâto start taking them. It was about bulking up and being stronger. You know, kicking ass with power on the field or on the court. It was all about getting regional and state wins and getting recognized by recruiters."
"And a lot of guys did this?"
"In the beginning. I mean, Eric supplied the steroids, so the guys depended on him. But Chase was totally against it because he called it cheating. There was a big blowup. For a while, pretty much everyone kept using, but then Chase started to get to them. Guys started quitting. Eric was totally pissed off. To him, it was about state championships and stuff. But making money too."
I released a sarcastic breath. "Eric's family has a lot of money. He's basically a rich kid."
Matt shrugged. "I guess guys with money always like to have more money."
"Are there still guys who use?"
"I don't really think so. I'm pretty sure Eric doesn't even use them anymore. But guys still got their weed and other stuff from him."
"So Eric is a drug dealer?"
"I mean, I guess he was."
"Was?"
"He might pass out the weed every once in a while, but he doesn't supply drugs like he used to."
My mind was clouded with confusion. "If Eric was mad at Chase for getting guys to quit steroids, but he doesn't sell drugs anymore, then what's the big deal between him and Chase? I don't get it."
"Chase and Eric are two guys who hold grudges."
"That's stupid."
Matt chuckled. "I never said either of them were geniuses.
